Are you building a new home in PEI?

Are you looking for information on percolation (perc) tests for septic systems?

IWT has a licensed site assessor on staff to perform Site Suitability Assessments including percolation tests in Prince Edward Island. These tests are required before any commercial or residential septic system is installed and dictates the design of the leachfield.

 Perc Test 1

The “perc” test is carried out in order to check the suitability of the lands for the installation of a leachfield. Proper leachfield design minimizes the impact of the discharged wastewater on the receiving environment/countryside. When functioning correctly a leachfield’s percolation area, soil and subsoil are used to treat and dispose of effluent from your septic tank, in an environmentally safe manner. Trial hole tests combined with derived soil tables indicate as to whether the subsoil percolation rate is high enough to allow the effluent to pass through without ponding but low enough to enable treatment.

The results of this test will allow the septic system designer and installer to accurately determine the volume and type of soil and fill that will be required for your septic system.

We’ve recently performed a site suitability assessment and perc test in the Belfast area on PEI. Belfast is known to have medium to coarse textured loamy soils and good permeability rates. This type of soil is generally very favourable in terms of on-site septic systems, but is very susceptible to erosion.

Our test pit showed us fine – medium grained loam throughout. Just over 60cm was permeable as the soil became too compact below that point. After our inspection of the soil we performed two percolation tests at different depths, which showed good permeability rates throughout the top 60cm. Putting all our data together resulted in a category 1 site.

If you are looking to sell a home and are required to carry out a percolation test or if you are a new homeowner or building contractor we can provide all your septic system assessment and design needs.
