IWT has operated it’s demonstration REGEN, solar powered wastewater treatment system at the Nova Scotia On-site Wastewater Center (Bible Hill, NS) from August 2014. Wastewater treatment performance evaluation was carried out by the Center for Water Resources Studies at Dalhousie University and demonstrated steady state BOD and TSS removal rates of 90 – 95%. This treatment solution was demonstrated to require 0.47 kWh aeration energy per m3 wastewater treated.

The REGEN solution was designed as a low-energy, high rate treatment solution that could be easily integrated with solar arrays for self-powered operation. Through support from the NRC-IRAP program, Dalhousie University tested the treatment system from April – Dec of 2015. The demonstration system was operated to minimize energetic requirements while maintaining high effluent standards.

The demonstration REGEN system was installed and continues to operate at the 3rd party testing facility in Bible Hill, Nova Scotia, Canada. Raw sewage was pumped from the Bible Hill Municipal Sewer Line, which is primarily comprised of domestic wastewater. The demonstration system was first installed in 2014, and is continuing to be operated at this dedicated test facility. Flow into the system was designed to operate at 1 GPM or 1500 GPD and during this test period flow varied from 0.8 to 1.13 gpm.

The demonstration treatment system incorporates 33% of the system volume with fully scaled 20” treatment systems to be designed with a flow rate of up to 3 GPM or 4500 GPD. The system is operated as a continuous flow system.

Performance evaluation was carried out by the Center for Water Resources Studies at Dalhousie University. The BOD and TSS levels in the effluent are well below the identified target of 30 mg/L.
